Credit Card Fraud Prevention Tips: What Are Your Best Tips For Preventing Credit Card Fraud?

by: Steve Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Accepting credit cards as an online merchant has its inherent risks.  And while sooner or later, you will get scammed, its important to keep it in perspective.  Your business will need to take credit cards to be successful online.  The goal is to keep your fraud percentage as low as possible.  In fact, you will need to do so, or your merchant account  processor may freeze or suspend your account.  New merchants (or those with a new web urls) should be especially cautious since scammers often target new merchants.  They can estimate how old your site is by looking at your domain registration date.

I thought I would see if everyone could contribute advice on red flags or prevention tips by responding to this post.

I’ll start with the first one.

1.  Always take a few extra steps to validate each order.  Don’t assume that your card processor will look out for your best interest.  Do not accept orders unless complete information is provided (including full address and phone number).  If this means contacting the customer for follow-up information, do so.

Now is your turn.  what else raises red flags, or causes you to scrutinize orders?

A great way to decrease the amount of credit card fraud is to implement a top notch security program. Also, using a check payment system on the site can decrease credit card fraud. This is a great way to increase conversions, but at the same time decrease the potential for cc fraud.

Thank you for the comments. I appreciate the comments. I agree that accepting checks is another way to increase conversions online as it gives yet another way to accept payment. Can you explain, how does accepting checks reduce fraud? Is accepting checks using a check payment system more secure than credit cards? My understanding is that check payment systems have similiar types of risk as credit card systems. Fraudsters can spoof bank routing transit numbers and account numbers just like credit cards numbers, along with addresses, phone numbers and the like which help support the action. Check payment systems are good for adding additional payment methods to the sites, but I think “any” payment system whether its credit card, checks, paypal, etc, all have some inherent risk.
