E-Commerce Basics: Google Is Not Your Customer

I have recently written some posts about on and off-page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. Today, I want to emphasize something that I think outweighs anything you do SEO-wise.

Your online store is not all about the search engines.

While SEO is important, you need to keep in mind that above all else, your customer is not Google. Your customers are real people.

When creating your web page copy such as product descriptions, first and foremost concentrate on what is useful to your customers. Be aware of things like keyword density, keyword matching, etc. but do not make it your primary focus. If your products are relevant to the customer’s search, and the product descriptions are detailed and “targeted to humans”, you have a better chance of increasing conversion and actually making a sale. Answer your customer’s questions and describe the product. In and of itself, that will be enough relevancy to pick up the search engines if you properly describe your products. Never forget who your customers are. Its not Google.
