E-Commerce Shipping Basics: Shipping To Puerto Rico And Other U.S. Territories

by: Steve Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Q. How do you ship to U.S. Territories like the U.S Virgin Islands, Guam, and Puerto Rico?

This is a question I am asked every now and again. Almost all items I ship to these territories ship out via the U.S Postal Service. The postal service treats all U.S. territories as Domestic locations. This means you do not need to follow any additional rules and restrictions that are different from within the United States. Its significantly cheaper and there are no extra forms to fill out.

UPS and Fed-Ex usually treat U.S. Territories as International Shipping (at least from a rate perspective) but that may have changed as of the time of this writing. It used to be very expensive to ship to these territories with Fed-Ex and UPS compared to the postal service, but I would not hesitate to pay the extra if you are shipping items of high value. Check out they websites for additional information.
