ECommerce Lab

This area is for experimenting.  One thing I firmly believe in, is trying new things and to see what works and what doesn’t.  When I try new things, I will post them here as a way to share them with you.

See below for “Work In Progress”…

The Nautical Modeler:  I am building an ecommerce store from the ground up, right before your eyes using Camtasia Studio. This allows me to “show you my desktop” as well as capture my voice as I walk you through all the steps from conception to launch.   The store is fictitious,  but is 100% operational.  I am trying my best to keep it relatively simple from a technical standpoint.  I realize that things like design and presentation on the ecommerce site could be better.  The point is not to show you the pretty stuff (we’ll let web designers do that), but rather show you the process and some of the steps involved in creating an online store.   Hopefully you can follow along, on your own, or at least help you get a better understanding on how to approach a new site with your web development team.

(Note: This is a work in progress.  Every 1-2 weeks I will be posting new video on topics such as:

1. Overview and project details <Video – Part 1>
2. Why Niches Are Important <Video – Part 2>
3. Finding The Right Niche For You
4. Market Analysys
5. Planning and conceptualizing your store (layout, navigation, categories, etc).
6. Choosing, installing, and setting up a shopping cart system.
7. Populating your store with products, setting up shipping and taxes and other administrative tasks.
8. Setting up your store to accept credit cards
9. Testing and going live
10. And many others.

I am using the fictional ship modeling store “The Nautical Modeler” which is a seller of ship models and accessories.  We will get a basic store up and running first, then we will walk through the steps to add more advanced features as well as apply SEO strategies and advanced 3rd party integration (UPS, FedEx, Quickbooks, inventory uploads, etc)

The actual process does not take long,  but since I am also using “video capturing tools”, each segment will come out over time.
