Are Businesses That Use Twitter Really Interested In Following You?

I am relatively new to Twitter.  I have only had my Twitter account tied to this website for about 2-3 months.  I notice that Twitter brings a lot of traffic click-thrus to this website, but the average time spent on the website is small (1.12 minutes) compared to those coming through Google (5.43 minutes). So I wonder how many Twitter users are following "just to be followed back?" or are legitimately interested in the site?  I think, that it may be partly related to curiousity to see what the site is about, then (hopefully) they return when they get time later.  But I also think a lot of people just click in as part of following just to see if I will follow them back.

Another interesting thing is the behavior of Twitter followers in general.  Many "follow" then after 24 hours disappear if I do not follow back. I know many are just seeking to get a mass number of followers so they can turn around and spam you to death with messages. I tend to follow people for the informational aspects of it, not for the expectations of a "follow-back".  I rather have a very small group of targeted followers than a large group of widely scattered people.

So I am curious, for those using Twitter, what has your experience been like?  Up to this point I have not introduced Twitter to my stores.  I will probably introduce it slowly mainly because I find it hard to manager all the things I have been involved in.

Thoughts?
